Good morning. Happy Friday.
This is shocking to say but- the best things in your life almost certainly ambushed you.
The friend who eventually became family didn’t announce herself as important — you spent the first six months thinking she was just funny at parties. The book that quietly rewired how you think sat on a shelf for a year before you finally opened it. The city, the apartment, the person you love — none of them arrived with a sign.
Meaning doesn’t operate on a timeline you can plan. It reveals itself, slowly, usually while you’re paying attention to something else entirely.
I’ve been thinking about how strange it is that we know this instinctively about people and vacations— and forget it completely the moment we decide to get something for ourselves.
1. Speed has quietly replaced discernment, and we barely noticed the swap.
We’ve been trained to believe that if we want something, we should have it by tomorrow — and if we can’t, something is wrong, not the desire.
The luxury industry now competes on the same axis as fast food:
how quickly you can receive it.
Which is, if you stop and think about it, an odd way to measure luxury.
The whole point of a beautiful object used to be that it was rare, or slow, or difficult to acquire — and therefore worth the pursuit.
Something quietly essential has been lost in that trade.
What would happen if we slowed down?
2. What you wait for, you actually get to have.
There is a specific pleasure that only exists in the space between wanting something and receiving it.
I remember when I wanted a husband- I waited years, and lo-behold - in at a concert- he found me.
Love can find you long before you notice. It can be found not only with people, but in the little things that you touch, surround yourself and choose.
It can absolutely be created.
By the time the object of your choosing arrives, it’s already made by your love. That’s the difference between something you buy on a whim and something that you strategically thought of to inherit in your life.
