Before You Buy Anything Else — Ask Yourself This.

How to build buying confidence like an Art Collector

Good morning.

I've been turning a thought over all week, and perhaps it's one worth borrowing for yourself.

What if the greatest luxury wasn't owning something expensive...

...but owning something that endured like wine.

Most of us have been taught to measure luxury by what others have.

Yet if that were true, why do so many purchases, big or small, lose their magic so quickly?

I believe it is because cost and significance are not directly correlated.

Here’s why,

The objects you collect or purchase over a lifetime, are the ones that reflect you.

It’s like holding a mirror every time you buy something.

If this wasn’t true, look around you and your environment.

What we see in front of us is exactly the kind of life that we have built.

Intention and unintentionally doesn’t matter. It’s what you choose to ooze.

Think of the objects you’ve collected over time that matters to you.

It could be:

A wedding band worn smooth over decades.

A watch that still keeps time because someone else once wound it every morning.

A handwritten recipe with flour pressed into the paper.

A handbag that still takes your breath away.

None of these are valuable because they're rare.

They're valuable because they've become inseparable from the life you’ve built.

And interestingly, the research points in exactly the same direction.

Across decades of behavioral studies, people consistently report greater and more lasting happiness from experiences than from acquiring possessions. Experiences are anticipated, remembered, retold, and relived. Their value compounds rather than depreciates.

A true heirloom occupies a remarkable space between the two.

It is, technically, an object.

But emotionally, it behaves like an experience.

Each year adds another chapter.

Each memory increases its worth.

Every milestone expands the length of its story.

Which leads to a question you can ask before you purchase—anything intended to last.

"Will this mean more to me ten years from now than it does today?"

It's a surprisingly interesting question.
